U.S. police ask for arrest warrant for Park's former spokesman

U.S. law enforcement authorities are mulling over seeking an arrest warrant for the disgraced former spokesman of President Park Geun-hye in connection with his involvement in a high-profile sex scandal, Seoul's Justice Ministry said Sunday.

According to the ministry, the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington D.C. and the state prosecution service are discussing whether to apply for an arrest warrant against Yoon Chang-jung, who is accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward a young Korean-American intern of the Korean Cultural Center in Washington D.C. during his trip to the United States in early May as a member of Park's entourage.

"We understand the two organizations are discussing whether to file for an arrest warrant or not," said a ministry official. "Some say that the court has already endorsed the arrest warrant. But we have not heard yet whether the federal prosecutors asked the court to approve the arrest warrant, let alone whether the court approved it."

The Washington police, who have so far said an investigation into Yoon's case was under way, reportedly plan to file misdemeanor charges against him.

The 56-year-old Yoon, who had accompanied Park to Washington for her first summit with U.S. President Barack Obama, hastily returned to South Korea on May 8, shortly after the woman contacted the U.S. police.

President Park immediately fired Yoon and offered an apology to the nation over his alleged sexual misconduct. In a news conference in Seoul on May 11, Yoon flatly denied the accusations against him. (Yonhap News)
