Seoul university head under probe on suspected embezzlement
By Park Bo-ram
SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors said Tuesday that they have sent a summons to the head of a private Seoul university over suspicion of embezzlement.
Park Chul, president of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, was asked last week to appear before prosecutors to face questioning about the embezzlement suspicion, officials at the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office said.
Prosecutors have launched a probe against Park after the education ministry's inspectors raised suspicion that Park presumably misappropriated about 160 million won (US$152,000) in school funds, mostly earmarked for public relations costs, they said.
"The summons was sent last week, but Park has not responded to it yet," a prosecution official said.
The prosecution detected the president's previous purchase of gift cards worth some 100 million won and is looking for the final destinations of those cards, according to the officials.
