Ex-top S. Korean prosecutor accused of sexual harassment
A former prosecutor general has been accused of sexually harassing a woman at a golf resort he owned, local police said Wednesday.
Officials at the Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency said they would open an investigation into the former top prosecutor, whose name was not disclosed, for allegedly molesting a female employee at a golf resort in June 2013. The woman pressed charges against him on Tuesday, they said.
The victim's father told local media that the accused called for her as she was showering in her room at the resort-owned dormitory.
She was then forcibly kissed and hugged and later handed 50,000 won (S$59), the father said.
The former top prosecutor is also accused of verbal abuse, allegedly telling the victim that she should be his lover.
"She was so humiliated that she tore up the money, and suffered from anthropophobia (fear of people) for a while. She wouldn't even come near me," the victim's father said.
He added that his daughter quit her job the day after the incident.
The accused has denied the charges.
Police officials said they have yet to verify the facts related to the case, and added they would soon summon the woman for questioning.
The case is the latest in a series of high-profile sexual abuse cases that sent shockwaves across the country.
Former National Assembly speaker Park Hee-tae was embroiled in a scandal in September after a golf caddie accused him of inappropriate physical contact.
A former top prosecutor of Jejudo Island stepped down in August amid allegations of lewd public acts. He later admitted to the charges and claimed he had a mental health problem.
Also in August, the enlisted son of Gyeonggi Gov. Nam Kyung-pil was accused of physically and sexually abusing a junior soldier.
He was later sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
