An opposition lawmaker called Wednesday for the resignation of the presidential chief of staff and three other key aides in connection with a scandal over an alleged power struggle.
Park Jie-won of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy said Kim Ki-choon, the chief of staff to President Park Geun-hye, and three other of Park's key aides should quit to ensure prosecutors can conduct a proper probe into the scandal.
"People would believe the outcome of the investigation if these people quit," Park said in a party meeting. He served as chief of staff to President Kim Dae-jung between 2002 and 2003.
The presidential office showed no immediate reaction.
His demand came amid a political firestorm in South Korea over allegations that Jeong Yun-hoe, who served as chief secretary to Park during her term in parliament, interfered in state affairs.
Jeong holds no official title in the Park administration, although he regularly met with incumbent presidential secretaries and received briefings from them, according to news reports.
The allegations surfaced following recent news reports that Jeong tried to mastermind a plot to oust Kim Ki-choon, the current chief of staff to Park. The reports cited an internal document from the presidential office dated Jan. 6.
The presidential office has dismissed the document as nothing more than a compilation of groundless rumors. Jeong has also claimed that the leaked document is fake.
Moon Jae-in, a lawmaker of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy, also demanded that the parliament launch its own probe into the alleged meddling in state affairs by Jeong.
Moon, who served as chief of staff to late President Roh Moo-hyun, described the alleged meddling and the leak of the document as a serious crime. (Yonhap)
