DP Critical of Pres. Office Reshuffle
The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) says the appointment of Kim Ki-choon for chief of staff is like pouring oil on a fire.

The DP’S chief spokesman Kim Kwan-young on Monday raised issue with the new presidential chief aide, saying he actively sought the passage of an impeachment motion against former President Roh Moo-hyun.

The spokesman also said the former Justice Minister was a key figure in a 1992 political intervention scandal of state agency heads. Three days ahead of the presidential election that year, Kim met state agency chiefs of the Busan region at a restaurant. The main opposition party at the time and a former employee of the then-National Intelligence Service eavesdropped on the meeting. They disclosed the conversation in which Kim and the agency chiefs discussed stoking regionalism ahead of the 14th presidential election.

The DP spokesman also criticized the appointment of former ambassador to the European Union and Belgium, Park Joon-woo, for presidential senior secretary for political affairs. He said the DP doubts whether Park is able and qualified to coordinate opinions with the opposition camp.

The spokesman said the DP is doubtful of whether the appointees for top posts in the presidential office will properly carry out key states affairs, including economic democratization and welfare policies.
