야후뉴스는 23일 프랑스 법원이 구금 중이던 유병언의 딸을 석방했다는 소식을 AFP 통신을 받아 보도했다. 

기사는 한국으로 유 씨를 송환하라는 1심 판결을 번복한 바 있는 프랑스 항소법원은 유 씨를 한국에 인도할 것인지를 결정하는 데 정보가 더 필요하다고 판결을 내리고 정치적 연관성과 무죄 추정의 원칙에 대한 위협 등을 고려하여 유 씨의 석방을 결정했다고 전했다.

이어 조건부 석방을 승인받은 유 씨는 세월호의 소유주인 청해진해운 유병언 회장의 딸로 수백만 달러의 돈을 착복한 혐의로 한국 정부의 수배를 받고 있으며, 한국 당국은 이 자금 착복이 세월호 참사의 원인이 됐던 안전 결함에 일조했다고 믿고 있다고 말했다.

기사는 유 씨의 아버지 유병언 씨가 작년 6월 과수원에서 시신으로 발견됐으며 오빠 유대균은 회사의 공금을 유용한 혐의로 징역 3년형을 선고받았다고 덧붙였다.

A French court on Tuesday released the daughter of a South Korean tycoon blamed for a ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people, ruling that more information is needed before a decision can be made on whether to extradite her.

프랑스 법원은 화요일 300여 명의 목숨을 앗아간 세월호 참사에 대해 비난받아온 한국 재벌의 딸을 석방하며 그녀를 송환할지 결정을 내리기 전에 더 많은 정보가 필요하다고 판결했다.

Yoo Som-Na, 48, is wanted in South Korea on suspicion that she embezzled millions of dollars from subsidiaries of her family’s company, Chonghaejin Marine Co.

48세의 유섬나씨는 가족 소유의 회사 청해진해운의 계열사로부터 수백만 달러의 돈을 착복한 혐의로 한국 정부의 수배를 받고 있다.

Authorities there believe the alleged embezzlement contributed to safety defects that led to the April 2014 Sewol ferry disaster which claimed the lives of more than 300 people, most of them schoolchildren.

한국 당국은 대부분 학생들이었던 300여 명의 목숨을 앗아간 2014년 4월 세월호 참사의 원인이 되었던 안전 결함에 이 자금 착복이 일조했다고 믿고 있다.

Yoo has been held in France for more than a year.

유 씨는 1년여 전에 프랑스에서 체포됐다.

A court in Paris in January authorised her extradition, but the appeals court overturned the decision in April, meaning that her case had to be reconsidered by a lower court.

프랑스 법원은 1월 그녀의 본국 송환을 허가했지만 4월 항소법원은 그 판결을 번복하며 이 케이스가 하급 법원에서 재고되도록 결정했다.

On Tuesday, an appeals court in Versailles outside Paris ruled that French justice authorities would need more information to make a decision on whether to extradite Yoo, her lawyers said.

화요일, 프랑스 외곽 베르사유의 한 항소법원은 프랑스 사법 당국이 유 씨를 한국에 인도할 것인지의 결정을 하는데 정보가 더 필요하다고 판결을 내렸다고 그녀의 변호사가 말했다.

“Taking into account the political context, the threats to the presumption of innocence… [the court] decided to release” Yoo, her lawyers Olinka Malaterre, Herve Temime and Rachel Lindon said in a statement.

“정치적 연관, 무죄 추정의 원칙에 대한 위협 등을 고려하여 … [법원은] 유 씨의 석방을 결정했다”고 그녀의 변호사 올링카 말라테레, 에르베 테민 그리고 레이첼 린던은 성명에서 발표했다.

“It’s a relief after 13 months of unjustified detention.”

“정당하지 않은 13개월간의 구금 끝에 다행한 일이다.”

A judicial source said Yoo had been granted conditional release, without specifying the conditions.

한 사법 관계자는 유 씨가 그 조건은 명시되지 않은 채로 조건부 석방을 승인받았다고 말했다.

Yoo’s father Yoo Byung-Eun had been the target of a nationwide manhunt after he refused to respond to an official summons following the ferry disaster.

유 씨의 아버지 유병언은 세월호 참사 이후 공식적인 소환에 불응한 후 전국적인 범인 수배의 대상이 되었다.

The tycoon, who in addition to his substantial business interests also ran a religious group, was found dead in a plum orchard last June.

그의 상당한 규모의 사업체뿐만 아니라 종교단체를 운영했던 그 재계의 거물은 작년 6월 메실 과수원에서 시신으로 발견됐다.

A post-mortem failed to determine the cause of death.

Yoo Som-Na’s brother Yoo Dae-Kyun was found guilty in November in South Korea of siphoning off some $7.2 million (6.3 million euros) from the company and sentenced to three years in prison.

유섬나의 오빠 유대균은 회사로부터 약 7백2십만 달러(6백3십만 유로)를 유용한 혐의로 한국에서 11월에 유죄 판결을 받고 3년 징역형을 선고받았다.

That same month, the Sewol’s captain was jailed for 36 years for gross negligence and dereliction of duty, while three other senior crew members were sentenced to jail terms of between 15 and 30 years.
